Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is facing one of its first major political challenges since returning to Parliament after a viral video involving Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam sparked widespread public debate.
As questions mounted over the controversy and the party`s response, Jamaat on Tuesday announced an internal investigation, saying it would gather relevant facts before deciding on any organizational action.
The controversy has drawn particular attention as Jamaat has long projected itself as a party committed to moral values, organizational discipline and accountability.
Political observers say how the party handles allegations involving one of its own lawmakers could influence public perceptions of its commitment to those principles.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and Secretary of the party`s Central Publicity and Media Department, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, said the party had been monitoring reports published in the media and on social media regarding the incident.
The statement said remarks already made by Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first and second wives, and the father of his second wife would be taken into consideration during the party`s assessment.
"The actual incident will be examined by collecting information and evidence, and necessary organizational action will be taken in accordance with the party`s constitution," the statement said.
The party also urged people to refrain from spreading unverified information before the inquiry is completed and described attempts to harass or publicly humiliate individuals over personal and family matters as unacceptable.
However, Jamaat did not specify when its inquiry would be completed or whether any interim action would be taken against the MP while the investigation remains underway.
From AI claim to second wife
The controversy began on Monday night after videos allegedly showing the Satkhira-4 lawmaker in a private setting circulated widely on social media.
Soon after the footage surfaced, `Crime Barta`, a platform linked to the district Jamaat media cell, claimed the videos had been created using artificial intelligence.
That claim later came under question after fact-checking organization Rumor Scanner said it found no evidence supporting assertions that the videos were AI-generated.
A day later, Gazi Nazrul Islam issued a detailed statement on his verified Facebook account, rejecting allegations that the videos showed an extramarital relationship.
Instead, he said the woman seen in the footage is his legally married second wife, Mariam Begum, whom he married on June 17 with the consent of his first wife.
MP alleges blackmail
In his statement, the MP claimed the controversy stemmed from a family dispute involving his second wife`s relatives.
According to him, on July 13 he visited a business office in Dhaka`s Moghbazar with both his first wife, Maksuda Begum, and his second wife, Mariam Begum. He said the office belonged to his second wife`s father.
The MP alleged that during the visit, his driver and one of his second wife`s relatives returned with several unidentified individuals who held them hostage and extorted Tk1 lakh.
He further claimed that the vehicle he regularly used was later seized and additional money was demanded in stages.
According to Gazi Nazrul Islam, videos of private moments between him and his second wife were secretly recorded during the incident and later circulated on social media in an attempt to portray the relationship as an illicit affair and damage his reputation.
Calling the circulation of the videos a violation of privacy, he urged the authorities to identify those responsible and take legal action.
Questions remain
While the MP has publicly acknowledged that the woman in the video is his second wife, questions remain over several aspects of the incident, including the circumstances under which the footage was recorded and later leaked.
The authenticity of the videos and the claims made by both the MP and other parties could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, Satkhira district Jamaat Secretary Azizur Rahman told reporters they believed the footage had originated from CCTV cameras installed at a residence in Dhaka, although that claim also could not be independently confirmed.
Spotlight on Jamaat
The controversy has shifted attention from the personal allegations to the party`s response.
Jamaat`s decision to launch an internal inquiry suggests it is seeking to address growing public scrutiny while avoiding a premature conclusion before verifying the facts.
The outcome of the investigation is now expected to determine not only the future of the lawmaker within the party but also how Jamaat navigates one of its first significant controversies since re-entering parliamentary politics.
